Strategic Engagement for Regional Planning Success

Introduction:

A recent client approached us to help them prioritise investments and more strategically deliver long-term benefits to their community for the next 25 years. The challenge was to engage a diverse group of stakeholders to develop a shared vision for the region, align strategic priorities, and set the groundwork for future planning. Partnering with Proud Mary Consulting, we led the engagement process and developed a prioritisation framework, demonstrating how a collaborative approach can create a clear and strategic path forward.

The Challenge:

The challenge was to engage community members, industry stakeholders, and government bodies in a process that balanced environmental, economic, and community needs while aligning with long-term strategic goals of the client.

The Approach:

We facilitated a comprehensive engagement process to build consensus and co-design a shared vision for the region’s future. Our approach focused on:

  • Stakeholder Engagement Workshops: We conducted surveys, tailored workshops and established a reference group, ensuring diverse voices were heard and incorporated into the planning process.
  • Vision Development: We facilitated visioning sessions that aligned stakeholder input with strategic priorities, creating a cohesive framework for future project prioritisation.
  • Inclusive Decision-Making: We established a representative working group to guide the project and ensure ongoing alignment with community aspirations.

Results:

The engagement process culminated in a strategic plan that clearly communicated regional priorities and identified investment opportunities. This approach successfully aligned stakeholders around a shared vision, creating a strong foundation for future projects and investments.

Lessons Learned:

  • Early Engagement Builds Ownership: Involving stakeholders from the start fosters a sense of ownership and strengthens support for the plan.
  • Co-Design Enhances Inclusivity: A collaborative approach ensures that diverse community needs and aspirations are reflected in strategic planning.
  • Strategic Storytelling Drives Investment: Connecting technical projects to broader community benefits enhances buy-in and attracts future funding.

Relevance to Council Plan Development:

This collaborative approach to strategic planning mirrors the process councils undertake when developing a Council Plan or Community Vision. By engaging Councillors, executives, and the community in co-design, councils can ensure their plans comply with the Local Government Act and truly reflect community priorities.

Invitation to Councils:

If your council is reviewing its Community Vision or preparing to develop a new Council Plan, Grantus can support you in creating a plan that is strategic, compliant, and community-driven. Let’s work together to shape a clear and inclusive path for your community’s future.
